A field guide to choosing an easel for painting outdoors.

PAINTOMIC FIELD GUIDES

A wet oil panel needs a safe ride home. A watercolor wash needs a board you can tilt. Choose your kit around the picture you want to bring back and how far you plan to carry it.

Oil on panels. The Martlet 8 × 10 has a side-loading wet-panel carrier. Choose it if you work on small rigid panels and want to pack up while the paint is still wet. Match your panel dimensions and thickness to the carrier before ordering.

Watercolor on a larger sheet The 11 × 14 Watercolor Folding Travel Easel gives you room for a sky wash. Start with a shallow tilt, then raise the board if you want the bead of water to travel faster.

Urban sketching and gouache The 6 × 8 Watercolor Urban Sketch Kit suits a small street study. For gouache, carry a few tubes separately and use the same small paper format.

MEEDEN

Oil painting For a kit that also includes paints and brushes, see the MEEDEN oil set with sketch easel box. Plan how you will support the box on location and carry the wet study home.

At the easel with Paintomic. Set your panel angle first, then use Composition to try two crops of the scene. Once the horizon and the largest shape feel right, put the phone aside and draw them on the panel.
